Facebook's Irish users to trial data transfer service

Facebook today announced a new tool that would allow users to transfer their photos and videos from Facebook to other storage services, starting with Google Photos.

It was built as part of the open-source Data Transfer Project - a technology partnership between major social networking and digital companies created to make information hosted on one social media service available on other services.

Facebook users in Ireland will be the first in the world to trial a new service that will enable them to transfer their data from the social network to another online platform.

US and European regulators have been examining Facebook's control of personal data such as images as they look into whether the tech giant's dominance is stifling competition and limiting choice for consumers. All of these companies are part of the Data Transfer Project, an open-source project aimed at (as the name implies) making it so that "all individuals across the web could easily move their data between online service providers whenever they want".

The tool can be accessed in Facebook settings within Your Facebook Information - you can also download your information from here.

With privacy top-of-mind, Facebook said the media transfer process will use encryption and password authorization before a transfer can take place. The tool will initially only support Google Photos, and could even support other services like OneDrive in the future.

The company said it will first be available to people in Ireland and will be refined based on user feedback.

"We believe the Data Transfer Project shows that industry-led solutions can help make data portability a reality", Mr Satterfield said.
