Iran said on Monday it would further reduce its commitments under a 2015 nuclear deal if European parties failed to shield Tehran's economy from sanctions reimposed by the United States after Washington quit the accord previous year.

Iran will "take a strong step" away from its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers if Europe can not offer the country new terms by a deadline at the end of this week, a government spokesman said Monday as top Iranian diplomats traveled to France and Russian Federation for last-minute talks.

'Maybe there has been a misunderstanding.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said talks on the credit arrangement, which would be guaranteed by Iranian oil revenues, were continuing, but United States approval would be crucial.

Rouhani said talks could take place if the USA lifted sanctions, but only alongside other signatories of the 2015 nuclear deal - the so-called 5+1 powers. Rouhani reiterated that Iran will not enter talks with the United States unless Washington lifts its sanctions against Tehran first. If not, Iran is very serious about decreasing its nuclear commitments. "If Europeans can purchase or pre-purchase our oil and we can have access to our money, that will ease the situation and we can fully implement the deal... otherwise we will take our third step", he said.

Iran's leader Hassan Rouhani told his parliament this week that European leaders must do something "significant" if Iran is to avoid moving further from the deal.

A senior Iranian official familiar with the negotiations said: "France has offered the credit line of US$15 billion but we are still discussing it".

"The president (Rouhani) still holds the same position that because of national interests, if he's sure that meeting someone will help our people, he will not hold back", Rabiei said, quoted by state news agency IRNA.

The nulear deal was agreed between Iran and the so-called 5+1 - United Nations Security Council permanent members Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany.

He added that the technical details - like potential credit line and US sanctions waivers - still remained to be worked out. The landmark 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action between Iran and leading world powers sought to limit Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons in exchange for relief of economic sanctions.
