The pair and two of their colleagues saw the alleged attacker wielding what Paul said was a knife covered in blood, and chased him, The Guardian reported.

She was taken to St Vincent's hospital suffering a non-life threatening injury from a single stab wound to her back.

The suspect was pinned down with a chair and milk crate and then taken into custody by the police.

Images broadcast by Australian media showed the man jumping on the roof of a vehicle brandishing a knife, appearing to shout "Allahu Akbar" and "shoot me".

The body of a 21-year-old woman was found in an apartment building near the scene, at a busy intersection in Sydney.

NSW Police commissioner Mick Fuller said in a press conference that the suspect had a history of mental illness and they were investigating reports about him having escaped from a mental facility.

New South Wales Police said in a statement: "Inquiries are under way after the body of a woman was found inside a unit on Clarence Street, Sydney, about 3.15pm (0615 BST) today".

She added, "One of the guys who was chasing pushed him in the back, then as he was falling the firies got him in the legs, and then they pinned him down with the chairs".

Luke, a professional Thai kick boxer, told the BBC: "I was sat at my desk and heard a massive scream outside".

'As I'm thinking about doing something the guy jumps on the front of the auto which was on the bonnet over here and then he goes up to the very top'.

"Members of the public actually physically restrained the offender".

"They are significantly fearless people", he said.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said: "The violent attack that took place in Sydney this afternoon is deeply concerning. And I want to acknowledge that".

Luke and Paul O'Shaughnessy, from Bury in Greater Manchester, said they acted on instinct as they saw the man wielding a large blade running through the streets.

Three Britons have been hailed as "heroes" by police after they helped detain a knifeman linked to the death of a 21-year-old woman in Sydney.

It was the selfless quick-thinking of several men who worked together to stop him that likely prevented further tragedy.

"We have a female person with a stab wound to the back now being treated by paramedics and is en route to a Sydney hospital", police Superintendent Gavin Wood told reporters in Sydney.

Wood called those who detained the suspect before police got to the scene "heroes".

"I just thought 'is my brother going to be OK?' as we ran towards him". To approach a person with the mindset of what this person (had), these people are clearly heroes.

"A number of crime scenes have been established", a spokesperson said.
