FILE - In this October 10, 2016, file photo, Boston Red Sox's David Ortiz waves from the field at Fenway Park after Game 3 of baseball's American League Division Series against the Cleveland Indians in Boston.

Aside from ruling out a robbery attempt, police officials have not commented on a possible motive in the attack, in which two assailants rode up to the establishment, Dial Bar and Lounge, on a motorcycle, and after one of them shot Ortiz, attempted unsuccessfully to flee on the motorcycle.

Ortiz was famously protective of Boston during his time with the Red Sox, and won global attention for a defiant speech in the days after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing in which he exclaimed "This is our f***ing city" on national television.

Garcia reportedly confessed to being involved in the shooting, according to Frank Félix Duran, a spokesman for the Dominican Republic National Police.

The former Boston Red Sox slugger underwent a second operation at Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital overnight after being flown from the Dominican Republic on Monday. Doctors removed his gallbladder and part of his colon and intestines. Leo Ortiz told local media he had no idea why his son would have been targeted.

"He is resting", the elder Ortiz said.

Ortiz is to continue his recovery in Boston.

"If we had known that there was a unsafe situation, he would not have been there at that time", Ortiz's rep said.

Two other people were wounded, including Jhoel López, a Dominican TV host who was with Ortiz. The third person and the injuries he or she sustained were not identified.

The bar is in a bustling nightlife district packed with dance clubs and expensive bars that Ortiz is known to frequent.

Accompanied by the medical team, the father of former Red Sox player David Ortiz, Leo Ortiz, speaks to the press, June 10, 2019, during a press conference at the clinic where David was admitted after being shot in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

"(Ortiz's family) got back to me this morning. "He was a guy that I could go to". "It's a tough situation". He retired three years ago.

The Red Sox retired his number, 34, in 2017, and Boston renamed a bridge and a stretch of road outside Fenway Park in his honor. Ortiz maintains a home in Weston, on the outskirts of Boston.

Kennedy was asked about Ortiz's impact on the city in the days after the Boston Marathon bombing.

"On behalf of me and my family, I want to thank John and Linda Henry, Tom Werner, Sam Kennedy and the Boston Red Sox for all that they are doing for David and our family, as well as Dr. Larry Ronan and the awesome staff at Massachusetts General Hospital". "Our focus is on his health and on getting him back here for treatment".
