ITV has permanently cancelled The Jeremy Kyle show after the death of a guest who appeared on the programme.

Carolyn McCall, ITV's chief executive said in a statement on Wednesday: "Given the gravity of recent events we have chose to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show".

McCall said the show had a loyal audience and had been made by a dedicated production team for 14 years, but it was the right time for it to end.

His last regular radio show was at talkSPORT ten years ago when he hosted The Jeremy Kyle Sunday Sports Show.

After Steve Dymond's death became widely reported, ITV issued a statement that reflected the immediate choices it was making concerning The Jeremy Kyle Show's future, and was pulled from the schedule, replaced by an episode of Dickinson's Real Deal.

"Broadcasters and production companies have a responsibility for the mental health and wellbeing of participants and viewers of their programmes".

The Jeremy Kyle Show guest who died days after recording the episode reportedly split from his partner following an attempt to prove he was not a cheat.

An Ofcom spokesman said: "This is clearly a very distressing case".

The episode featuring Mr Dymond and Ms Callaghan is said to have been filmed earlier this month.

McCall said the investigation into the episode is "under way and will continue".

The show was initially suspended following news of Mr Dymond's death.

The pre-recorded episode Mr Dymond took part in was based on the subject of infidelity.

ITV, Britain's biggest free-to-air commercial broadcaster, had said it has extensive support system for participants before, during and after the show, and said the programme had helped many people to resolve complex personal problems.

Philip Clements and Florin Marin appeared on The Jeremy Kyle Show. Autopsy results would be needed to further determine the cause, and it's expected that an inquest will be opened.

ITV faced scrutiny over its support for reality show talent following the deaths of former Love Island contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis.

"The previously announced review of the episode of the show is under way and will continue. Although we can only assess content that has been broadcast, we are discussing this programme with ITV as a priority to understand what took place".

The presenter is yet to personally comment on the show's cancellation.

Asked if there were particular shows that there were concerns about, he cited "Love Island".
