An animal lover died after being bitten by a puppy she rescued that was infected with rabies, according to reports.

According to the family, no one in the group of friends had been vaccinated against rabies.

It is the first rabies-related death in Norway for more than 200 years. "They played with the puppy in the garden" of the resort where they were staying, the family said in a statement published on Thursday evening. As she was a health worker, Kallestad sterilized and addressed the wounds herself. "Our fear is that this will happen to others who have a warm heart like hers", her family said.

She sought medical attention several times upon returning home but doctors were unable to diagnose what was wrong. Signs that the disease has progressed include hallucinations, slight or partial paralysis, anxiety, confusion and fear of water.

Rabies is a virus that can be transmitted from animals to humans via bites and saliva, and it can prove fatal if not treated early.

There is a vaccine for rabies, but in order to be effective, it must be given before symptoms appear.

The family continued: 'If we can achieve this, the death of our sunbeam can save others'.

Ms Kallestad fell ill shortly after returning home to Norway, then died this week in the hospital she worked.

The others who were on the trip and who were also in contact with the dog have been alerted and Norway's health trust has so far been in contact with 77 people who have been in contact with the Birgitte.

Rabies is a viral infection which targets the nervous system and the brain.

It is only spread by infected animals to humans, most often through the animal biting or scratching the person.

More than 99% of rabies cases in countries where dogs commonly have the disease are the direct result of dog bites.

At least 59,000 people worldwide die each year worldwide from the animal-borne disease, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
