Three US troops killed by roadside bomb in Afghanistan

"The loss of Sgt. Jasso is felt by his family and loved ones, by all who served with him and by all on this mission to protect our country and our allies", Gen. Scott Miller, commander of Resolute Support and U.S. Forces Afghanistan, said in a statement.

Three US service members and an American contractor were also wounded in the blast, the military said.

The city, which sits on the main highway linking the capital Kabul with Kandahar in the south, was overrun this year by a large Taliban force before it was driven off by Afghan and US troops after days of heavy fighting.

The wounded were evacuated to receive medical care.

His own future will be decided by presidential elections due in April but organizational and political problems may hamper the vote with authorities admitting they are considering a delay of three months.

The names of the fallen service members are being withheld for 24 hours after notification of their next of kin, according to Defense Department policy.

Most of the remaining Western forces mainly train and advise the Afghan security forces, which have been struggling against attacks from a resurgent Taliban and other militant extremist groups.

The deaths are the latest in a growing toll on USA forces in Afghanistan following the death of an army Ranger during an operation against al Qaeda militants in Nimruz province on Saturday.

This is the second attack in a month targeting United States forces in the region.

Earlier this month, Taliban fighters took swaths of two outlying districts in Ghazni province, forcing thousands of civilians to flee the violence and leading to demonstrations in the Afghan capital calling for the government to oust the insurgents.

The US forces are part of the Nato-led Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, which has more than 16,000 personnel.

The soldier's death follows a spate of so-called "insider attacks" that have rattled foreign troops tasked with training and assisting Afghan security forces. Some 15,000 USA soldiers are now serving in Afghanistan.

It's the deadliest attack on US soldiers in the country in the past year.

"U.S. troops are fighting terrorism side-by-side with us".
