That year saw almost 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD with nearly 1.7 million cases in 2017, up from just over 1.4 million in 2013. Females between the ages of 15 and 24 made up 45 percent of the cases.

"We are sliding backward", said Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS.

"It is evident the systems that identify, treat, and ultimately prevent STDs are strained to near-breaking point".

The numbers were described as "very concerning" by Dr Gail Bolan, director of the Division of STD Prevention at the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a federal agency which released the stats.

In the a year ago, cases of primary and secondary syphilis grew more than 10%.

STD rates have also surged in Indiana.

Other STDs on the rise include chlamydia with a 25 percent increase and gonorrhea with a 17 percent increase from 2007 to 2017.

David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, said the rise is due to stagnant federal funding for prevention efforts, a lack of screening and a decrease in condom use.

But Fraser pointed out that the solution to the rising STD problem is not going to be "treating our way out of it", and that a solid public health infrastructure is also needed.

Most STDs go undiagnosed and untreated, the CDC said, which can cause infertility, stillbirth and an increased risk of HIV.

More than 4 percent of gonorrhea samples were resistant to azithromycin in 2017, up from 1 percent in 2013.

Diagnoses of gonorrhea rose by 67 percent overall from 333,004 in 2013 to 555,608 cases, according to preliminary data for 2017.

But Bolan reported that a "small, but growing fraction" of lab specimens of gonorrhea are showing "signs of antibiotic resistance". To do that, we need the government to step up and ensure those working to prevent STDs have the resources they need to do so effectively.

Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis can be cured with antibiotics.
