The highly-anticipated launch of the "Block 5" Falcon 9 rocket finally took place today, marking the debut of SpaceX's Bangabandhu Satellite-1 mission.

The latest version of the Falcon 9 has around 100 upgrades, and includes a recoverable booster that is created to be reused at least 10 times, allowing more frequent launches at lower cost - a key to billionaire Elon Musk's business model.

After successful liftoff, the rocket returned to an upright landing on the "Of Course I Still Love You" droneship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. It is the first Bangladeshi communications satellite put into space by SpaceX.

The first flight of the upgraded Falcon 9 rocket was actually delayed by a day, after an automatic abort was triggered on the planned May 10 launch. The company also arranged for the spacecraft's launch on the Falcon 9. He expects more customers to start gravitating toward "flight-proven" rockets as he calls them.

As the deployment of Bangabandhu Satellite-1 to geostationary transfer orbit was confirmed, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "In the continuous advancement of Bangladesh another milestone is added today".

Many in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country reportedly gathered in front of TV screenes early on Saturday to see the satellite's live launch.

By the end of 2017, Musk aims to launch two missions with the same rocket in the span of 24 hours. Launching almost every other week - while developing a very big reusable Mars rocket and a constellation of 4,425 broadband satellites - SpaceX has become one of the most valuable private companies in the world, worth almost $28 billion.

She thanked the satellite building and launching company, the USA and the French governments for their support.

The Block 5 launch is expected to be the last major upgrade to a workhorse rocket.

In addition, the upgraded Falcon 9 is more powerful than the previous versions, thanks to the nine Merlin engines in the rocket's first stage and the single "vacuum Merlin" in the second stage.

The landing was the first one for the Block 5 version, but the 25th for a Falcon 9 rocket with an orbital launch. It's predicted to function as first SpaceX motor vehicle to satisfy NASA's standards for its Commercial Crew method to hold agency astronauts into the International Space Station.

Renting out broadcasting capacity will be one of the main goal of the satellite as Bangladesh now meets its demand for satellite connectivity renting from foreign operators spending about $14 million a year.
