That incident prompted the FAA to propose previous year that similar fan blades undergo ultrasonic inspections and be replaced if they failed.

"There are various iterations of that (engine) and so I can't say exactly what that air worthiness directive might have applied to at this point, but that will be part of our investigation", he said.

A female passenger died after being almost sucked out of the cabin.

The jet's CFM56-7B engines were made by CFM International, jointly owned by General Electric and Safran Aircraft Engines of France. That incident prompted the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to propose past year that similar fan blades undergo ultrasonic inspections and be replaced if they failed.

"It's the second time in only two years that this exact type of failure has happened in the exact same spot".

Sumwalt expressed concern about such a destructive engine failure but said it was too soon to draw any conclusions about the safety of CFM56 engines or the entire fleet of Boeing 737s, the most popular airliner ever built.

Mr Sumwalt also said a casing on the engine is meant to contain any parts that come loose but, due to the speed, the metal was able to penetrate the shell.

The Federal Aviation Administration calls the masks "the first line of defense against the potentially lethal effects of hypoxia and carbon monoxide poisoning".

Passenger Kathy Farnan said crew members knew what they were doing and kept everyone calm.

Boeing and CFM said they will help with the NTSB investigation into the incident.

Who was the victim?

Jennifer Riordan, 43, the mother of a preteen daughter and son, grew up in Vermont and met her husband, Michael, while both were in high school, her sister-in-law said. "There was a lot of blood because she was hit by some of the shrapnel coming off the engine after it exploded". A woman sitting next to the window was partially blown out and died of her injuries.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health said Wednesday night that Riordan died of blunt-impact trauma to her head, neck and torso.

She is said to be the first person to die in an accident involving a U.S. airline in nine years.

Who was the pilot?

Cockpit recordings show how calmly Ms Shults dealt with the situation as the aircraft plunged towards the ground.

Rebecca Avitia, the executive director of the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, said that losing Riordan casts a dark, heavy emptiness on the city. Investigators also did not find any pieces of the window inside the plane. That lady, I applaud her, ' said Alfred Tumlinson, of Texas.

MidAmerica Nazarene University, where Shults graduated, is highlighting the faith of their now-famous alum.

"We are still in the very beginning stations of looking for what we need", he said.

Shults: "OK. Could you have medical meet us there on the runway as well, we've got, um, injured passengers".

Many social media users defended Martinez's use of Facebook Live, but some said he violated passengers' privacy and sought cheap fame.

How did the drama unfold?

But during the descent, Martinez said he and some of the plane's other passengers thought they wouldn't land safely.

"In the unlikely event of a loss of cabin pressure, panels above your seat will open revealing oxygen masks."

Just look at the left engine of Southwest Flight 1380, and it's obvious that something bad befell that machine.
