"Clouds are gathering over the BBC", Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Interfax news agency after the Ofcom investigations were announced.

Last week the worldwide chemical weapons watchdog backed Britain's findings on the type of chemical used in the attack, but the Kremlin disputes the claims.

It is noted that the claims relate to the question of due impartiality of news and documentary programs of the channel.

Two of the investigations are into a programme called Sputnik, hosted by George Galloway.

The licences for both services cover broadcasts on satellite and the internet.

TV Novosti has had a total of 15 breaches of the broadcasting code since 4 May 2012, including eight breaches of the rules on due impartiality, which Ofcom said was "not an unusually high number".

Prime Minister Theresa May previously faced repeated calls for the Government to take action against RT in the Commons.

After British Prime Minister Theresa May accused Russian Federation of being behind the poisoning, Britain's media regulator Ofcom warned that RT producer TV Novosti could lose its right to broadcast in Britain if it failed its "fit and proper" test.

Media regulator Ofcom warned on April 18 that TV Novosti, the company which produces RT, could lose its British broadcasting rights if it failed its "fit-and-proper" test.

Ofcom says: "On March 12th 2018, following the use of a nerve agent in Salisbury, Ofcom said that we would consider the implications of these events for the broadcast licences for RT and RT Europe and this document provides an update to that statement including setting out our approach in this case".

The watchdog says it may also look at non-broadcasting related content where it considers it relevant to the likely future conduct of the broadcast licensee and/or to public confidence in the broadcasting regime as a whole.

"We are pleased to see that Ofcom has acknowledged RT's compliance record has been in line with other broadcasters, putting to bed any of the salacious political statements and challenges made against our channel", Belkina said.

Commenting on Ofcom's move to investigate RT, the Russian Embassy in the United Kingdom has voiced concern that the "targeted" scrutinization directed at one particular news organization and regarding one particular issue would affect the freedom of speech in the country.

"However, it has never been Slainte Media's contention that the tweets, emails or messages from the first show were from viewers or audience members of that first show given, by definition, the very first edition of a pre-recorded show (unlike every single Alex Salmond Show since that time) could not possibly present any messages or reaction from those viewers".
