ABC picks up '90s 'Goldbergs' spinoff based on Penn Charter teachers

The series follows the action at William Penn Academy after Adam, Barry and Erica Goldberg graduated.

ABC is not giving up though as it has ordered to series a retooled version of that same spinoff with a former cast member of The Goldbergs returning in a lead role.

Guest starring are Bryan Callen as Coach Mellor, AJ Michalka as Lainey, Alison Rich as Valley Erica, Niko Guardado as Ruben Amaro Jr., Nate Hartley as Dan, Louis Gregory as Uncle LOUIE and Eric B.as Manager. The official logline of the spin-off states that "despite their eccentricities and insane personal lives", Principal Glasscott, Coach Mellor and Lainey Lewis are "heroes to their students". She still recurs in the now airing fifth season. Now, the spinoff will air during the 2018-2019 season.

From Marc Firek and Adam F. Goldberg, The Goldbergs spinoff on ABC will unfold at the William Penn Academy. It was the highest-rated episode of the season at that point. Like the mothership series, it will be a co-production by Sony Pictures TV and ABC Studios. They suggested that it run instead of a repeat of The Goldbergs, and, without much fanfare, the spinoff episode got traction.

"For me, every show that's about teachers, and there's been a number of them, they're like misfits who hate the kids and don't want to be there and hate their jobs", he told Deadline previous year. That fit into what they wanted to do.

The Goldbergs is now in its fifth season and will be back for a sixth next season.

Sean Giambrone stars as Adam, alongside Jeff Garlin as his father and Wendi McLendon-Covey as his mom.

The spinoff is being written by Firek based on a story by him and Goldberg. Troy Gentile and Hayley Orrentia play his older siblings and George Segal plays his maternal grandfather. Meadows and Callen have recurred since then, and Michalka has recurred in Seasons 1, 2 and 5 and was a series regular in Seasons 3 and 4.

New episodes of The Goldbergs air on ABC Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
