Google to Introduce Self-destructing Email Feature in Gmail

The new "confidential mode" will reportedly let users set their emails to expire after one week, one month, or other time periods.

In a statement, Google did not confirm specific changes but did acknowledge that it's working on a change to its email service. New design and features will be added in this update along with the ability to reply fast to emails, to snooze emails until later, and a new sidebar to place calendar appointments side by side with messages. The feature could be called "confidential mode". In addition to a fresh design, the company also listed some of the new features. Also, the new feature will be smoothly embedded in the compose screen of the Gmail website which will make it easier for the users to switch to the "Confidential Mode".

TechCrunch states that the feature isn't ready yet, as their source arrived at a non-existent page after clicking on the "Learn more" option to open Google's help articles.

According to the G Suite email, G Suite customers and regular Gmail users will have to opt in into a new Early Adopter Program to access the new Gmail.

Keep in mind that Talk to Books just launched and it will be refined over time.

The tech giant said to be revamping Tasks, which is likely to encourage people to stay in their inbox for most of their working day, getting everything done via a single webpage. As per some screenshots, users will be able to set an expiration date so that the sent email disappears or is unreadable after a week or several years depending on what they choose. It's also not confirmed that these emails will include end-to-end encryption. Unless protection is offered against the incredibly simple process of taking a screenshot of any supposedly confidential mail, the whole feature might well be useless, and will simply protect against inbox searches post the expiry of the email. From there they'll need to login again to read the email.
