Principal photography began in London this morning and the film takes place in the 1960s.
A Twitter account for the movie has posted the first picture of Zellweger as Garland as filming gets underway, giving fans a glimpse at just how much Zellweger has been able to transform, physically at least, in to Garland.
It also focuses on her romance with musician Mickey Deans, who Garland married several months before her death in June 1969 aged 47.
The film will feature some of her best-known songs, including the timeless classic "Over the Rainbow", JUDY celebrates the voice, the capacity for love and the sheer pizzazz of "the world's greatest entertainer".
