The robot was installed at a Cali Burger outlet in Pasadena and replaced human cooks.
The large robot with robotic arms is still on display at Caliburger, in a "Flippy's Kitchen" stage that lets customers see the robot at work, flipping hamburgers.
"I couldn't be more proud of my incredibly talented team for their hard work in bringing Flippy to life and we are just getting started", said David Zito, co-founder and chief executive officer of Miso Robotics.
Flippy won't be late for work, and he won't show up with stains on his uniform.
A burger-flipping robot called Flippy has been switched off after just one day on the job because it is has generated so much interested in its cooking that it is unable to keep up with demand, the BBC reports. Miso Robotics, the company that created the robot, said in a statement that it was testing the code that controls Flippy to make sure that it can cook at a faster pace during the busiest times. "When you're in the back, working with people, you talk to each other".
Cali said that it started to use the robot to get around the problems it has recruiting staff.
Restaurant chain Caliburger had told USA TODAY it would install Flippy in as many as 50 of its restaurants this year, starting with the Pasadena location, and continuing to Seattle, Washington, DC and Annapolis, Maryland in the next months.
Its creators, robotics firm Miso Robotics, had hoped to bring Flippy to 50 other CaliBurger locations across the USA, including Seattle, Washington, DC and Annapolis, Maryland. He also won't be able to place raw burger patties on the grill himself or add cheese, so, rejoice fast food teenagers, there's plenty of work still to be done. Combines 3D, thermal and regular vision, Flippy can automatically detect when raw burger patties are placed on the grill and monitors each one in real-time throughout the cooking process.
Flippy's creators argue that the robot will bring some consistency to an industry that grapples with high turnover rates.
CaliBurger employees in the location are also receiving extra training.
In July, Miso Robotics received $3.1 million (£2.3 million) in funding from strategic investors, including Acacia Research and Match Robotics VC.
