Speaker Madigan Fires Aide Over Inappropriate Texts

While Madigan's attorney launched an investigation, no disciplinary action was taken until Monday of this week, a day after Hampton took her story to the Chicago Tribune.

"Kevin should have been fired a year ago", Hampton said on Monday. She left her position in April previous year.

"After Ms. Hampton advised the Speaker and the investigation was conducted, I realized the extent of the text messages and the nature of the conduct". Quinn said in a statement on Tuesday. He has worked for Madigan for almost 20 years.

Text logs shared with the Chicago Tribune show Hampton asked Kevin Quinn several times to stop asking her out and sending suggestive texts, which started in 2016.

Kevin Quinn, a six-figure public employee who works in Madigan's legislative office, is the brother of Chicago Alderman Marty Quinn, described by the Chicago news media as Madigan's hand-picked choice for the city council. He also sent the woman inappropriate text messages.

He returned to his state work on November 9, 2016, until July 31, 2017, and again moved to the political side on August 1, 2017, until he was dismissed. This was just after the passing of SB 402, which specifically prohibits sexual harassment within the legislature and other state bodies.

Chris Kennedy, a Democrat running for governor, says the speaker should at least temporarily relinquish his role as head of the Democratic Party of IL.

"I immediately met with Kevin and told him to stop all communication with Ms. Hampton. I only needed to tell you because it has been very painful to experience alone". Hampton's request was that Kevin cease all communications with her.

In a statement, Alderman Quinn says Hampton asked him to be discreet with the accusation, so he didn't tell the speaker.

But, after hearing nothing further, she reached out again to Ald, Quinn in mid-January. I told her I would make sure he never contacted her again.

Hampton also said she knows of other cases.

It turns out Madigan did not make the matter public until it was clear the Chicago Tribune had interviewed the woman - veteran Madigan campaign worker Alaina Hampton - and that Hampton meant to file a harassment complaint against Madigan campaign entities with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

She alleged the harassment issue kept her from moving up in the political organization.

"The only reason this is not a sexual harassment complaint is because they led her on and ran the clock", Lorna Brett, the former president of Chicago NOW who has provided pro bono assistance to Harvey Weinstein's accusers, said in press materials ahead of the press conference.

"The irony of Michael Madigan protecting a sexual harasser while championing laws to fight it can not be overstated", said Lorna Brett, former president of Chicago NOW who is advising Hampton. I thought I took swift action and handled the matter as she requested.
