While there's no public evidence that this occurred, Mueller reportedly has already interviewed staffers "to determine if the joint [RNC-Trump campaign] effort was related to the activities of Russian trolls and bots aimed at influencing the American electorate".

Speaking to the newspaper, Trump said he believes special counsel Robert Mueller will treat him fairly - a view in contrast with recent attacks on Mueller´s credibility from Republicans, who have pressed for a new independent prosecutor to investigate anti-Trump bias.

He then quickly pivoted into the Special Counsel investigation into his own Administration for possible collusion with Russian Federation. Currently, the Senate and House Intelligence committees and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are looking into Russian interference in the election.

President Trump tweeted Tuesday that the investigation is "tainted", and some Republicans have claimed some of the investigators are biased against Trump. "But I think he´s going to be fair", Trump said of Mueller.

He told the Times that "for purposes of hopefully thinking I´m going to be treated fairly, I´ve stayed uninvolved with this particular matter".

President Trump's lawyers predict the investigation will wrap up soon.

While the president deflected a question about a Justice Department investigation into Hilary Clinton's emails, he insisted, "I have absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department".

The 30-minute interview took place at Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, Fla., after lunch with his playing partners, including his son Eric and pro-golfer Jim Herman, the Times reported.
