Turns out that teaser image that Infiniti released earlier in the week was a sneak peak at the new Infiniti SUV - the QX50. The QX50 will be the luxury brand's rival to the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 and so on. Together with an all new body, Infiniti's new SUV brings with it the world's first production variable compression ratio gasoline engine.
The Japanese vehicle company has just released the above image of the new addition to the range, the vehicle will be seen in the flesh for the first time at the LA Auto Show next week.
Like the concept, the side of Infiniti's new QX50 features black wheel arch trim, chrome accents around the side windows and a pair of seductive lines running horizontally along the doors.
Underpinning the new model is a an all-new platform, Infiniti says, consisting of a front-wheel-drive-based configuration.
The large SUV, which is also built on an all-new platform, has a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine called VC-Turbo that can adjust its compression ratio from 8:1 (for performance) to 14:1 (for fuel economy). It does this through a unique multi-link mechanism that is able to raise or lower the pistons' reach. It's not yet clear how efficient the newfangled engine will be, however. All-wheel drive models are expected to be faster. Strangely, these figures aren't actually that impressive compared with similar petrol rivals.
Like many other new models from Nissan, the Infiniti QX50 includes the company's ProPILOT semi-autonomous driving technology, capable of controlling steering, acceleration, and braking on single-lane highways. This can assist with the accelerator, brakes and steering to keep the auto safely within a motorway lane, although Infiniti says it hasn't equipped the vehicle with a fully autonomous mode because its customers "have stated their desire to remain a key element in driving".
"The QX50 is the most important vehicle we have ever launched, and it embodies everything the brand stands for: attractive design, advanced technology and empowering performance".
