Cycling's governing body, the UCI, said in a statement released on Tuesday evening that it was satisfied that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games had been postponed due to the coronavirus crisis, "in the health and sporting interests of the athletes, as well as all concerned people and parties".

Also agrees with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's proposal to have the Games by next summer at the latest.

United States President Donald Trump has expressed his support for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe over the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Over the weekend, the International Olympic Committee said in a press release that it would "step-up its scenario planning" relating to the games, after Australia and Canada both announced they would not send athletes to the games unless they were postponed.

On Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach announced in a joint statement that the Summer Games would be postponed one year amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

"Continuing to pursue the dream of the Tokyo 2020 Games happening this year does not make sense; postponement is the only logical option", IPC chairman Andrew Parsons said on the committee's website. "I'm excited to get back to racing, looking forward to Tokyo 2021, and wishing everyone a safe 2020"'. "We know they are adaptable and resilient, and they understand that this decision is necessary to ensure a fair field of play and protect the health of both athletes and the wider global".

"We acknowledge this has been a very hard situation for both the IOC and the Tokyo 2020 organising committee and we thank them for listening to our athletes and athletes worldwide to provide some certainty".

"We are advancing on our schedule independently of that of Tokyo".

While the delay will alter training plans and derail months of preparation, top American cyclists applauded the decision to reschedule the Summer Games that were scheduled to start July 24.

The Olympic flame will stay in Japan "as a beacon of hope to the world during these troubled times".
