The cost of Myles Garrett's suspension

Mike Tomlin Rudolph's agent: Garrett legally liable after ESPN interview
Noah Ferguson | 19 February, 2020, 20:08

Tomlin took ESPN to task for presenting Garrett's side of the story without paying much mind to Rudolph.

Thus, no matter how compelling the discovery process and the trial would be, it makes sense for Rudolph to let it go - especially since Garrett's defense lawyers would undoubtedly delve into every nook and cranny of Rudolph's life in an effort to develop any evidence that could be used to show that Rudolph's pre-defamation reputation wasn't as pristine as he'll try to characterize it as.

Garrett revealed details of the incident that saw him suspended indefinitely after he hit Rudolph with his helmet in an interview with ESPN's Mina Kimes Friday morning.

During an interview with ESPN, his first since being hit with a suspension after slugging Rudolph in the head with Rudolph's own helmet in the final seconds of a Browns win on November 14, Garrett said Rudolph called the defensive end "the N-word". Garrett specified that he called Garrett 'a stupid [N-word]' while getting sacked.

He said he took offense to the accusations against Rudolph, stating that the Steelers organization was cooperative during the process. Garrett, the Browns' star defensive end, aggressively tackled Rudolph in the waning seconds of the 21-7 game after Rudolph released a screen pass - and it is apparently then that Garrett contends Rudolph said the slur.

The NFL investigated the incident and found no evidence a slur had been used.

The NFL has twice said it found "no evidence" Rudolph used a slur during the November 14 Steelers loss at Cleveland.

Tomlin went so far as to say he "struggled with" Rudolph facing or deserving any culpability at all for the incident.

"1000% false, " Rudolph tweeted about the accusation.

"He said what he's consistently said throughout this entire ordeal: that he did not and would not say what was said that he said", Tomlin said Monday. By what was displayed by ESPN and that panel the way that the situation was presented I don't think was fair to Mason Rudolph. His reputation has been tarnished because of the allegations, none of which was founded. "I did not, have not, and would not utter a racial-slur. I don't use it because I don't find it appropriate". He was a quarterback in the losing circumstances at the end of a football game.

He says in the interview that if the National Football League didn't find any hard evidence of racial remarks, then the chances that it happened are small. "We would not participate in the covering up of such issues and we would obviously do what was appropriate in terms of dealing with those circumstances". Tomlin added he wants to move forward and put the ordeal in the past. "And so that's what we're attempting to do but when this interview came back up this weekend, we thought that Mason needed to be defended".

"We've had a desire to move on from the moment it happened. We're getting ready for free agency and position ourselves for the Indianapolis combine and trying to build a victor for 2020".
