"The Embassy is in close coordination with the relevant Philippine and Japanese government agencies, and representatives of the World Health Organization and Princess Cruises to ensure that the needs of the Filipino crew and passengers are met and to facilitate their return to the Philippines", DFA said in a statement.

The US passengers were taken to either Travis Air Force Base in California or Joint Base San Antonio in Texas, and they will remain under quarantine for an additional 14 days.

The flight landed Monday morning at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California, both outlets reported. Overall, Japan has 419 confirmed cases of the virus, including one death.

American passengers from the Diamond Princess cruise ship board a plane headed for the U.S.at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo. About 380 Americans had been on the ship.

US evacuees will still be subjected to a 14-day quarantine once they are in the USA because "the degree of transmissibility on that cruise ship is essentially akin to being in a hot spot", Fauci explained on Face the Nation.

The US state department later said that 14 of the evacuees received had the virus, the report said.

Others who were on board said they are grateful to the president and the US government for rescuing them from the virus stricken vessel. Other governments, including Canada and Hong Kong, also will require the passengers to undergo a second 14-day quarantine.

The DFA said all the infected Filpinos were crew members of the Diamond Princess.

Two other Britons, Alan Steele, who tested positive for the virus earlier this month, and his wife, Wendy, who tested negative, have also criticised Japan's handling of the outbreak and the British government's lack of action.

Mr Abel's call comes as it emerged passengers could be stuck in quarantine beyond the initial 19 February deadline.

It is not known if the 99 people include new infection cases reported by the US government on Monday.

The ministry said it now has tested 1,723 people on the Diamond Princess.

A passengers is seen on a balcony of the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

"We are glad to be going home", Cheryl Molesky earlier told NHK TV in Japan.

"When I heard their voices though, the sound of those familiar American voices, it was immediately comforting", she said in the post.

"During the flights, these individuals will continue to be isolated from the other passengers", the statement continued.

Smith said the woman was not wearing a face mask and was standing "well within 6 feet" of another passenger on an adjacent balcony.

"If there are secondary infections on board, this is why", he said.

Smith said he and his wife chose to stay on the ship. "And you wanted me to get on a bus with her?"

"We're on a boat and we're watching people go away and people just make different choices about how they want to confront the virus".
