U.S. confirms 14th case of coronavirus with patient in San Diego

More than 800 Americans and family members evacuated from China aboard State Department-chartered flights since late last month have been placed under quarantine - the first imposed by the CDC in 50 years - at one of five USA military bases in California, Texas and Nebraska, according to the CDC.

Since Chinese authorities first identified the virus in 44 people in December, it has spread to 25 countries and infected 45,171 people, according to the World Health Organization's (WHO) Wednesday report. The overwhelming majority of cases and all but one death have been in China, where the virus' new strain originated, and most worldwide cases, including 13 in the USA, involve people who recently traveled to that country.

Also, the CDC provided an update on a testing problem that occurred with the nation's 13th patient, whose illness from the novel coronavirus was announced yesterday by California health officials.

Wednesday night, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed a fourteenth American had tested positive for the infection, now known as COVID-19.

The person was a "solo traveler" who arrived on a chartered flight February 7 from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, officials said.

Last week, the CDC had begun to ship about 200 testing kits to labs across the USA and 200 more to over 30 different countries so that more facilities could conduct testing for the new coronavirus. The delay in diagnosis might contribute to the disease's spread as patients under investigation (PUI) will remain unconfirmed as having the disease.

Officials say she was isolated at the base for testing and sent back to a hospital after results came back.

This is the first person under quarantine at JBSA-Lackland who had symptoms and tested positive for COVID-19. It's responsible for the planning, coordination and conduct of immunization programs in the United States.
