In a study by NIAAA, researchers found that, in 2017 alone, almost half of alcohol-related deaths were the result of liver disease (31 percent; 22,245 people) or an overdose on drink [alone or with other drugs] (18 percent; 12,954 people).

Extra People are ordering extra rounds and that is resulting in extra funerals, in response to a new study on alcohol-associated deaths.

This data showed that deaths from alcohol rose from 35,914 in 1999 to 72,558 in 2017. Also, in 2017, nearly 75% of overdose deaths involving cocaine and half involving psychostimulants involved at least one opioid. That yr there have been about 70,000 drug overdose deaths - about 2,300 fewer than these involving alcohol, according to the Facilities for Illness Management and Prevention. However, when analyzing annual will increase in deaths, the most important improve was amongst white ladies. "Because women reach higher blood-alcohol levels than men of comparable weights after consuming the same amount of alcohol, their body tissues are exposed to more alcohol and acetaldehyde, a toxic metabolite of alcohol, after each drink".

The study analyzed deaths in the USA, ages 16 and up with data from the National Center for Health Statistics. There were a total of just under one million deaths during that time period. CNN reports about 70% of adults in the USA consume alcohol, averaging about two drinks per day.

While men accounted for 76.4 percent of alcohol-related deaths over the past two decades, a greater increase was observed among women-a 135.8 percent increase in numbers compared to a 92.9 percent increase for men. Overall, 944,880 people died from alcohol-related causes during that time span.

"This is more speculative, but there is some cultural social force which is leading people to drink more", Tapper said.

The overall prevalence of drinking and binge drinking was largest for people age 50 and older, relative to younger age groups. "Better surveillance of alcohol involvement in mortality is essential in order to better understand and address the impact of alcohol on public health".

Women are also dying of alcohol-related causes at younger ages.

The study's authors connected this rise in deaths to higher alcohol consumption in the U.S. Average drinking is up around 8% since 2000 while binge drinking has increased 7.7%.
