
The social network developed the tool using code developed through its participation in the open-source Data Transfer Project, which it joined in July (along with Apple, Google, Microsoft and Twitter), with the aim of giving people more control of their online data.
The service would initially roll out in Ireland and then, in 2020, across the world, Facebook said.
Facebook today announced that the company is releasing a new tool that will enable users to transfer photos and videos from Facebook directly to other services. To access the tool, people can go to their settings within the Your Facebook Information menu.
USA and European regulators have been examining Facebook's control of personal data such as images as they look into whether the tech giant's dominance is stifling competition and limiting choice for consumers.
"There will also be potential privacy issues with data portability as users will potentially take risks when they move data to third parties, so companies and regulators will need to develop ways that deal with rogue actors".
Facebook said in September it supports data portability and is planning to build new tools around it.
'We've kept privacy and security as top priorities, so all data transferred will be encrypted and people will be asked to enter their password before a transfer is initiated, ' Mr Satterfield said.
The pilot begins this week in Ireland (where Facebook has been under investigation for alleged violations of European Union data privacy law).
"We believe the Data Transfer Project shows that industry-led solutions can help make data portability a reality", Mr Satterfield said.
