Jockey Craig Williams' Melbourne Cup win saw him join rare air, as the eighth person to win the Australian grand slam of racing.

Joseph O'Brien - who landed his first Breeders' Cup success on Saturday night in California - must have thought he was going to be a two-time Melbourne Cup victor with 50m to travel but Master Of Reality faded in the final stretch.

The Australian four-year-old worked up the rails in the straight to edge out Prince of Arran and Il Paradiso after Master of Reality, who had finished second, was relegated to fourth following a stewards' protest.

"The horse ran a fantastic race".

Running a game race once again in second was Prince Of Arran with Michael Walker just thwarted on Charlie Fellowes' charge having finished third 12 months ago.

In a desperate finish, Vow and Declare triumphed by half a head.

Wayne Lordan had to stop riding aboard Il Paradiso, who is trained by O'Brien's father Aidan, and the stewards quickly called an inquiry before eventually opting to demote Master Of Reality to fourth and suspend Dettori until November 14.

But that was of no concern to Williams who at last tasted Melbourne Cup glory at his 15th attempt.

"It's an amazingly special thing to happen, I really can't believe it", O'Brien told Channel 10.

The Sportsbet customer waited exactly two weeks after the 2018 Melbourne Cup had run before laying down their hard-earned cash on this year's victor, Vow and Declare.

Stewards have found that jockey Frankie Dettori blocked stablemate Il Paradiso in the run to the line, dumping the second place-finisher back to fourth.

Jockey Craig Williams rode the gelding to a famous victory, netting his owners $4.4million of the total $8million prize money on Flemington's hallowed turf.
