"We'll work something out with the Kurds so that they have some money, so that they have some cash flow". "But I never said there was a quid pro quo because there isn't".

Some of Mr. Trump's Republican allies said it was hard to defend the Doral decision and that it came at a politically sensitive time for the president, who is fending off an impeachment inquiry and widespread criticism over his decision to pull troops from the Turkish-Syrian border.

As for Trump's remark about the separate George Washington desks, Ellis, a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for history, said: "I think that's just fantasy".

"I will leave to the chief of staff to explain what it is he said and what he intended", Pompeo said.

President Donald Trump speaks during a Cabinet meeting in the Cabinet Room of the White House, Monday, Oct. 21, 2019, in Washington. Press secretary Stephanie Grisham said Sunday afternoon that Mulvaney still has the confidence of the president. The third issue cited by Mulvaney on Thursday was whether Ukraine was cooperating with an ongoing investigation by the Justice of Department. The shortage of viable replacements has kept other officials in their posts months after he soured on them. Holding the job of acting chief of staff since January, Mulvaney has frustrated aides who saw him as less willing than his predecessors to challenge the president.

"I have news for everybody: Get over it", Mulvaney had told reporters Thursday at the White House.

He also has clashed with White House counsel Pat Cipollone, sometimes mentioned as a potential Mulvaney successor, over strategy and tactics in response to impeachment.

Asked later if he'd offered to resign over the matter, Mulvaney said he did not.

The president regretted the turn of events because Doral had "tremendous ballrooms and meeting rooms" that would have been a flawless place to host worldwide leaders.

The administration and several top Republicans have consistently denied there was any such arrangement, and Mulvaney walked back his comments later that day.

Rep. Peter King (R-NY), who was in the group of lawmakers at Camp David told the Times that the he didn't necessarily see the move as a "big negative, but it certainly wasn't a positive" and that the group believed the decision would continue to be a "distraction" if Trump didn't make a reversal.

Since the early days of his presidency, Trump has faced multiple ongoing lawsuits alleging that he is violating the Constitution's Emoluments Clause, which prohibits a sitting president from accepting payments from foreign governments.

"I thought I was doing something very good for our country by using Trump National Doral, in Miami, for hosting the G-7 Leaders".

'No, absolutely not, ' Mulvaney responded. "Will we end up putting on an excellent G-7 someplace else?"
