UAW - Negotiations with GM have 'taken a turn for the worse'

Here's how the strike affects GM workers and profits UAW - Negotiations with GM have 'taken a turn for the worse'

The United Auto Workers strike against General Motors is in its third week, and it's costing a lot of people a lot of money.

GM made an offer to the union that basically repeated one the UAW had previously rejected, Terry Dittes, the UAW vice president in charge of the GM department, said in a letter to members.

Dittes' letter said the union presented a proposal to the company Saturday. He said GM responded on Sunday morning with its counteroffer, which "did nothing to advance a whole host of issues".

Dittes said that after making progress on key issues "a couple days ago, the company has shown an unwillingness to fairly compensate the great workforce of the UAW".

A statement issued by General Motors to MLive-The Flint Journal notes "We continue to negotiate in good faith with very good proposals that benefit employees today and build a stronger future for all of us".

48,000 members of the United Auto Workers have been on strike since the middle of September, seeking higher pay, a larger share of General Motors profits, and healthcare benefit protections.

But yesterday.reports emerged that a deal was anything but close, and talks had taken a "turn for the worse".

"We are committed to continuing discussions around the clock to reach a resolution", the spokesperson added.

The change in tone about the state of talks followed word on Saturday from a person familiar with negotiations that the remaining outstanding issues centered on pensions and 401 (k) s and the narrowing of the pay gap for in-progression workers.

The walk-off has also halted factory output at about three-dozen GM plants in the United States, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Almost 50,000 GM workers walked off the job in mid-September, launching the biggest labour dispute to hit the automaker in more than a decade.

Dalziel has been a GM worker for about 24 years.

A person briefed on the talks said Sunday that the union voiced concerns about GM increasing production in Mexico, where it now builds pickup trucks, small cars and two SUVs.

The UAW says to be disappointed in GM, because the last proposal was nearly the same as an earlier plan.

That means the almost 50,000 workers will continue to walk the picket lines as we head into week 4 of the strike.

Analysts estimate the strike has cost GM more than $1 billion USA, while LMC Automotive estimated on Thursday that GM has lost production of 118,000 vehicles through October 2.
