Extinction Rebellion: Arrests as global protests begin

Extinction Rebellion set to bring Dublin to a standstill as part of worldwide protest Dozens arrested on east coast as Extinction Rebellion protests begin

Officers were called to the bridge just after 5.50am to find climate protester Paul Jukes, 49, swinging from a makeshift harness about 10 metres below.

Mr Jukes was demanding Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner declare a climate emergency.

The environmental campaigners, known as XR, seek to draw attention to the "climate emergency" and want to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2025.

In April, members of the group blocked several London roads and bridges during 10 days of action created to alert the public and politicians to the "climate emergency".

But he also distanced himself from the movement.

"I am not really expecting I'll go to jail. I feel passionately for them (and worry) there is not going to be a world for them to live in".

ACT Police closed off the bridge to traffic from 11:00 am for about one hour.

"We need to take this seriously", said Kate Petriw, who joined the protest in Toronto this morning.

The prime minister has attacked the Extinction Rebellion activists protesting in London over the climate crisis, dismissing them as "uncooperative crusties" who should stop blocking the streets of the capital with their "heaving hemp-smelling bivouacs".

She also allegedly said that everyone will pack up whenever it stops being fun. Here's what you need to know.

The protest involved people of all ages and backgrounds and was led by a group called the Red Rebels, who represented the blood of the children who will die as a result of climate inaction.

The Airlie Beach engineer hanging about 50 metres above the river said he had 30 years' experience as a rock climber and felt safe.

In St James's Park, another group of protestors highlighted the implications of climate change on existing global inequalities, and set up a temporary camp.

"She passed away when my daughters were very young".

"My daughters have lost that connection to their mother".

The action, which follows similar protests in London in April, is due to continue for two weeks.

Police arrested several people and all roads have since been reopened.

Three protesters have been arrested in Sydney. Some of the protesters locked arms and chained themselves together, refusing to move.

Those arrested are aged between 19 and 75 and have been charged with failing to comply with police direction.

Today they are camped out at Carlton Gardens.

Some 60 events were planned around the world on Monday and in Germany they were keen to kick off proceedings early.

Spokeswoman Miriam Robinson said the plan was to "swarm" city centre intersections throughout the day.

"SORRY that we blocked the road, but this is an emergency", declared placards held by activists in Amsterdam. "I am still keen to do this but once I came across XR I was so relieved to have something I could do about the ghastly state we have got our planet in".

"We've done marches, we've signed petitions, we've written letters, we've done all those things, we've been doing all those things for decades, and it's not working."

In Perth, a demonstrator has reportedly been arrested for trespassing outside Seven West Media, the owner of The West Australian newspaper, which published a blank front page for demonstrators to use as a placard.

Protests began in Wellington's central business district and on the steps of parliament, and also took place in Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra.
