Making the rounds with the press to support his new book, Ed Stack, Dick's Sporting Goods' CEO, is earning wide attention for saying the retailer destroyed more than $5 million worth of assault-style rifles following its decision to stop selling the weapons.

Stack says the company, which has 720 stores in 47 states, destroyed over $5 million worth of the weapons formerly sold by the outdoor sporting goods company.

Dick's lost $250 million in sales by halting sales of assault rifles in its more than 700 locations after the school shooting in Parkland, Fla.

After learning that Dick's had sold a shotgun to the Parkland shooter, CEO Edward Stack last year announced that the company would no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age.

Even though it wasn't the weapon used in the shooting, that massacre largely impacted the company's actions.

"We found out that we sold this kid a shotgun", Stack told CBS.

That decision came just weeks after the mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, during which 10 people were killed and 27 others were injured.

In an interview with CBS News that aired Sunday, Ed Stack said following the decision previous year to stop offering assault-style rifles, the question of what to with the remaining inventory lingered. "If we really think these things should be off the street, we need to destroy them, '" Stack told CBS News" Lee Cowan.

Stack said he and his wife, Donna, have been grappling with the moral burden of selling firearms to potential mass shooters. "Take a Stand. Make a Difference", goes on sale Tuesday.

"We thought we'd get a little bit of a backlash, but we didn't expect to get what we got".

That shooting was close to home for Stack because Dick's sold a gun to the former student suspected the shooting, he told Cowan. Other companies, such as CVS, Kroger and Walgreens joined Walmart in asking customers to bring guns into their store.

Retail giant Walmart has ended all handgun and "short-barrel rifle" ammunition sales and asked customers not to openly carry guns at its stores.
