Related Death in St. Louis is First in Missouri, Health Department Says

Why it matters: The vaping-related lung disease outbreak in the United States has risen to 530 confirmed and probable cases as the number of deaths reaches seven.

Health Minister Christine Elliott announced yesterday that due to concerns about possible health issues related to vaping following a unusual surge in severe breathing problems or illnesses that seem to be related to vaping, she was ordering all public hospitals in the province to report all possible cases to the government. "Once the lungs are injured by vaping, we don't know how quickly it worsens and if it depends on other risk factors".

If someone is concerned about their health after using e-cigarettes, they should call the local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. A week ago, the CDC stated its initial findings from the probe point to clinical similarities among those affected.

Linda Stobo, the manager of chronic disease and tobacco control with the Middlesex-London Health Unit, said teens are particularly vulnerable to the marketing of vaping products.

Almost three fourths of the cases were reported in men; 67 percent were between ages 18-34; 16 percent are under age 18; and 17 percent are 35 years or older.

In the USA, 380 confirmed or probably cases in 36 states and one territory.

Based on data on the cases so far, almost three-quarters of the cases are male and more than half are under 25 years of age, Schuchat said.

The six who died in the USA were all adults and some had pre-existing lung problems or other conditions that may have made them more susceptible.

The department is recommending that Virginians "consider not using any e-cigarette products". Deaths have been confirmed in seven states - two in California and one each in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota and Oregon.

People who became ill experienced cough, shortness of breath and chest pain, and in some cases, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, health officials said.

It is unclear what any of the people who have died were vaping.

For instance, e-cigarettes are illegal in Japan, forcing the market to use heat-not-burn tobacco products for cigarette alternatives.

Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health has said he is sending informal email inquiries to respiratory specialists and intensive care units at the province's hospitals to look for similar cases as what's occurring in the U.S. The e-cigarette maker Juul is facing a slew of lawsuits from the parents, business, lawmakers and individuals across the country who argue the company's misleading marketing strategy gets people hooked on their fruity flavored products without fully disclosing the risks.

If people who vape experience symptoms, they should seek medical care.
