Jeremy Corbyn warns Boris Johnson a general election ‘is coming’

Conrad Doyle | 11 September, 2019, 07:56

Telling the house he wanted to discuss politicians obeying the rule of law in a speech that was persistently and angrily shouted down by his former Labour colleagues - with no attempt at intervention from the speaker - Mr Austin emphasised his feeling that it was hypocritical, given the past behaviour of members of the Labour leadership team, that they should lecture the Prime Minister on being lawful.

He additionally warned the prime minister basic election "is coming", however not on his phrases, because the Labour chief successfully launched his marketing campaign for an election he's but to vote for.

He will promise that MPs won't be "silenced" by Johnson's decision to prorogue parliament.

"Only Boris Johnson and the Conservatives will deliver Brexit by 31 October, no ifs or buts, so we can move on and focus on the issues that matter to people", said its party chair James Cleverly.

The party opposes a no-deal Brexit and has promised another referendum on any deal for leaving the EU.

Corbyn outlined a classic left-wing Labour pitch at the Trade Union Congress (TUC), reiterating his plan to nationalise Britain's rail network and utility companies, give workers seats on company boards and protect tenants against exploitative landlords.

The 59-year-old, who announced on Sunday he would be standing down from the Commons after 18 years representing Bassetlaw, said: "That's not a good recipe for winning a General Election and in the North of England, Labour will pay a huge price".

Speaking at Somerset House in central London, Mr Watson will say: 'The only way to break the Brexit deadlock once and for all is a public vote in a referendum.

"My experience on the doorstep tells me most of those who've deserted us over our Brexit policy did so with deep regret and would greatly prefer to come back; they just want us to take an unequivocal position that whatever happens we'll fight to remain, and to sound like we mean it", he will say.

Labour's unhelpful insistence on rerunning the referendum may be an obsolete policy by election time.

"And - of course - "remain" should and will be on the ballot paper along with a credible option to leave". We have something here which is the basic foundation of a perfectly pragmatic deal that we believe can command a majority in Parliament and also begin to reunite our deeply divided country, and even at this 11th hour we think there is time to do it'.

The PM had already kicked off his unofficial election campaign with a visit to Yorkshire on Thursday, during which he re-announced his police recruitment drive.

Labour MPs are divided over what to do next on Brexit.

Joined by non-Labour representatives including Rory Stewart and Norman Lamb, "MPs For A Deal" argue that the "WAB", which MPs never got the chance to vote on, secured some of the concessions Labour had been campaigning for until recently and could gain a Commons majority.
