The House Judiciary Committee next week will begin laying the groundwork necessary for an investigation into President Donald Trump that could result in his impeachment.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings sent letters to the White House, the vice president, Secret Service and the Trump Organization seeking details on Mr. Pence's two-night stay at the Doonbeg resort, which was 180 miles away from scheduled meetings in Dublin.

For much of the year, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler has focused on the findings of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling in the 2016 presidential election and evidence that Trump sought to impede the probe.

The letters come after Pence stayed at Trump's resort in Doonbeg, Ireland, this week.

"The Committee does not believe that US taxpayer funds should be used to personally enrich President Trump, his family, and his companies", Cummings wrote in one of the letters.

The panel has rebranded what was originally an oversight probe of Trump's presidency as an "impeachment" investigation, with the aim of deciding by the end of the year on whether to recommend articles of impeachment to the full House.

Trump first suggested the high-profile meeting be held at his resort on August 26 during a news conference in France.

The Democratic Party believes the upcoming procedure is the next step in the investigation of Trump's activity.

Cicilline said focusing on those matters - the President enriching himself potentially in violation of the Constitution - is a better strategy for the House Judiciary Committee, rather than areas that could be dismissed by the public as salacious, like the hush money, though he did contend that the matter was serious since the President may have broken campaign finance laws. "We must get America focused on the ongoing violations against basic constitutional principles". The push is part of an expanded effort this fall to investigate the president's financial entanglements and business practices.

The House Judiciary Committee is preparing to vote to formally define an impeachment inquiry into President Trump.

Nadler continued: "The impact that the President's business interests may have on his official conduct and American foreign policy interests demands scrutiny by Congress-as does the use of taxpayer dollars on properties or businesses benefitting the president".

Several other 2020 hopefuls, including Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker and Bernie Sanders, have said they support impeachment.

The request for documents included any communications about the decision making for where to host the next G-7 summit, including between the White House and the Secret Service and the White House and the State Department.
