Serena Williams of the United States reacts during her Women's Singles final match against Bianca Andreescu of Canada on Day 13 of the 2019 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Sunday in Queens borough of New York City.

Bianca Andreescu, of Canada, holds up the championship trophy after defeating Serena Williams, of the United States, in the women's singles final of the U.S. Open tennis championships Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019, in NY. "I think that's kind of been a little helpful".

"Serena didn't play badly, Andreescu has to have a lot of that credit".

Williams: "I don't know how to answer that".

The match was billed as a battle of ages given the near 19-year age gap between the pair, and was played out in front of a fiercely pro-Williams crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium. I know I have a different game style than many players on the tour right now. Andreescu had 17, while Williams had 33.

She rallied in the third game, finally making in-roads on Andreescu's serve, but it was a brief moment of hope as she dropped her next two service games to fall behind 5-1. Her meteoric rise has been one of the best Canadian sports stories this year - and her win is proof she will continue to be. "But I think that's what I've been doing really well throughout this whole year".

"I honestly don't think Serena showed up".

Andreescu talked about her meditative process throughout the U.S. Open, and said after her semifinal victory against Belinda Bencic that she had visualized winning the Grand Slam in NY, even writing herself a fake winner's cheque when she was 15.

"I'm so close, so close, so close and yet so far away", Williams told reporters.

"I don't want to take anything for granted, these are the moments you live for and I'm just beyond blessed", said Andreescu.

Andrescu put her fingers in her ears at one point, later admitting: "I couldn't hear myself think".

Williams will turn 38 later this month, while Andreescu turned 19 in June. I'm not necessarily chasing a record.

Williams has previously described herself as a fan of Andreescu and acknowledged that, with the exception of sister Venus, there is nobody she would rather lose to.

Following Saturday's U.S. Women's final, which the veteran tennis star lost 6-3, 7-5, Williams was critical of her own performance. I tried to step on the court and not focus on who I'm playing. She started the year with career winnings of just $215,888. "I have to do better, ´" Williams said.

"I've said this many, many times before".

In 2018, she lost the Wimbledon final to Angelique Kerber before a controversial US Open final defeat by Naomi Osaka, and was beaten in this year's final at the All England Club by Simona Halep.

And the upstart said she is not planning on slowing down any time soon.

"But (on Saturday night) it was the youngster who played the big points better". I could have played better.
