According to a statement from the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA), the airline was forced to cancel almost 850 flights Tuesday, which impacted more than 100,000 passengers.

"Our members' resolve is very strong and they remain very angry with BA, but they also want to leave no stone unturned in trying to find a resolution to their dispute", said BALPA general secretary, Brian Strutton. The union is demanding "less than £5m more than British Airways previously offered", adding that one day of strike action costs the airline approximately £40 million.

British Airways unit chief Alex Cruz told the BBC that the pilots had been offered a deal that would have lifted remuneration 11.5 per cent to 202,000 pounds, including benefits, making them among the best paid air crew in the world.

BA says it has offered pilots a pay rise of 11.5 per cent over three years but the union says its members want a bigger share of the company's profits.

British Airways has advised that if a flight is cancelled that passengers should not go to the airport.

The British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) is seeking higher salaries for pilots and has said that pilots "deserve a small fraction of that profit via, for instance, a profit share scheme".

Aside from today and tomorrow's strikes, pilots are also scheduled to have another strike on September 27.

The 48-hour walkout by pilots has resulted in at least 1,700 flights being canceled for Monday and Tuesday. Union representatives said they would have called off the strike if the carrier "had engaged with the offer".

IAG's stock has fallen more than 31% this year, partly in expectation that the dispute with pilots would culminate in a strike, Berenberg's Yanoshik said.

The airline operates roughly 850 flights daily and the industrial action could affect around 145,000 passengers each day, Efe news reported.

Speaking more broadly, Ms Kable said the issue of insurance covering industrial action depends on when the policy was purchased.

Pilots had to accept significant pay cuts during hard times.

Passengers are being told not to go to airports and BA says most have made alternative arrangements. The company said it understands the frustration of passengers affected by the strike. The pilots union put the cost of settling the strike at 5 million pounds, "one eighth of the cost of just one day's strike action", it said in the statement.

In a post Monday, British Airways said it had no choice but to cancel almost 100 percent of its flights because it had "no detail from [the pilots' association] on which pilots would strike", so it could not predict "how many would come to work or which aircraft they are qualified to fly".
