The response comes after China Labor Watch on Monday issued a lengthy report accusing the two companies of breaching numerous Chinese labour laws, including one barring temporary staff from exceeding 10% of the total workforce.

Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, is a major source of factory labour in China and has been a Foxconn manufacturing hub for years.

CLW's latest report focuses on the Zhengzhou Foxconn factory in China.

As per the CLW report, the plant has utilized dispatch laborers just as understudy laborers in overabundance of as far as possible to guarantee requests are met during pinnacle season.

The labour report comes at a time of trade tension between the United States and China that has threatened to upend supply chains across the technology industry with tit-for-tat import tariffs.

The company is working with Foxconn to "immediately resolve the issue", it was quoted as saying in a statement.

To attract temporary workers for repetitive, low-paying assembly line jobs, agents often promise bonuses worth several times the worker's monthly salary. Both Apple and its manufacturing partner Foxconn admitted that in August Foxconn hired more temporary workers to assemble iPhones than were allowed by law. "Multinational corporations helped drive economic development in China but they have also exploited loopholes in Chinese labor laws", CLW reported. The investigation found that temporary staff, known as dispatch workers, accounted for almost 50 percent of the workforce in August, while Chinese labor law stipulates a maximum of 10 percent, CLW said. By recruiting these laborers, "the factory does not need to increase the wages for all regular workers", it said.

"We believe everyone in our supply chain should be treated with dignity and respect", Apple also said in a statement.

With demand at its zenith during peak season, dispatch workers are commonly set up with Apple suppliers by agents who act as middlemen.

The report also alleges overtime violations.

Hon Hai said the process of enrollment, training and probation of workers in its work place is carried out according to law, while the company consults with its employees about their willingness before asking them to work overtime and provides comprehensive measures to ensure their safety.

Some workers put in at least 100 overtime hours each month, during busy production periods.

We looked into the claims by China Labor Watch and most of the allegations are false. It said the interns worked overtime voluntarily and were properly compensated. One investigator worked in the plant for four years and found other lapses as well including harsh working conditions. After taxes and mandatory fees, they get roughly CNY 3,000 (roughly Rs. 30,000) a month, according to the CLW report.
