"The natural style and absolutely intuitive user experience demonstrate a new, electric way of thinking", said Head Designer Klaus Bischoff.

Volkswagen has unveiled the all-new ID.3 fully electric hatchback at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Shown off with a pretty wild pink and blue paint job, it revealed the ID.3 would be available with three battery options covering 330 km, 420 km and 550 km (205 mi, 260 mi and 340 mi) of range on the WLTP cycle. But unfortunately for us, there are no plans to sell this particular BEV in the North American market. The ID.3 reflects the realignment of the Volkswagen brand and is also the first model with the new Volkswagen logo.

The pint-sized electric auto is "around the size of a Golf, with the interior space of a Passat and the acceleration of a GTI", and is based the modular MEB architecture that will underpin a large selection of Volkswagen Group electric vehicles in the years ahead.

Buyers of the ID.3 First Edition will get 2,000 kWh worth of electricity for free using the fast-growing European WeCharge network of public charging stations.

Unlike the Golf, the ID.3 is rear-wheel drive, with a rear axle electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries sandwiched in the floor.

ID.3 Max is the top-of-the-range version of the new family electric vehicle. The large 77-kwh pack offers up to 341 miles of range, according to Volkswagen.

It does have the promised range of 330km (WLTP) however, so the smaller and lighter battery instead can be seen as a positive. US ranges would be less than VW's quoted European figures. And finally, the top-spec offering gets a 77kWh battery pack that gives a range of 550km on a single charge. The mid-range 58kW version gets 100kW charging, while the range-topper gets 125kW.

The design of the ID 3 sets the visual tone for Volkswagen going forward.

From a fundamental design and interface standpoint, the ID 3 isn't something polarizing and radically different. There's less chrome and more distinctive lighted accents, VW suggesting in a news release that "light is the chrome of the future". The ID.3 is expected to arrive Down Under around 2022.

In terms of space, as above, it leads the family hatch class. Range-toppers are fitted with features such as an augmented reality head-up display, Beats sound system, panoramic glass roof and a lane keeping system with emergency assist. Little-changed since World War II, the new VW emblem was uncovered atop its headquarters in Wolfsburg on Monday.

Everything apart from the electric windows and hazard lights use touch-sensitive haptic controls, mostly located on the 10.0-inch central display and the steering wheel.

Taking aim at such competitors as the Chevrolet Bolt and the Tesla Model 3, the ID.3 is targeting a decidedly mainstream audience.

Customers wishing for more will be able to choose between the 1 Plus and the 1 Max models; the 1 Plus adds a rear view camera system, ACC Adaptive Cruise Control and the Kessy Advanced keyless access locking and starting system, as well as design seats, a centre console with two USB-C connections and ambient lighting, matrix LED headlights, matrix side lights, brake lights, turn indicators and tail light clusters as well as 19-inch light-alloy wheels.
