Malinga, Mathews, Chandimal opt out of Pakistan tour

He said that "informed sports commentators" had informed him the Sri Lankan players were confronted by Indian authorities and were told they would be excluded from the IPL if they went to play in Pakistan. Sri Lanka lost the series 3-0.

The Sri Lankan cricket board conducted a meeting with the players to inform them about the security arrangements and were given the freedom to decide on their participation in the tour.

After the limited over series, Sri Lanka will play two Test matches against Pakistan, but the dates and the venue are yet to be announced.

A source in the PCB said that the Sri Lankan Sports Minister had called the three players for a meeting on Monday in which they would be assured of the full security arrangements to be made for the tour.

"As far as the PCB is concerned, the tour is on and we look forward to welcoming the Sri Lanka team in Karachi later this month", a spokesperson said.

Pakistani minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain Tuesday accused India of coercing members of the Sri Lankan cricket team into dropping out of the Pakistan tour, stirring up another controversy on Twitter.

The players who opted out were one-day worldwide captain Dimuth Karunaratne, Twenty20 captain Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Suranga Lakmal, Kusal Perera, Niroshan Dickwella, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dinesh Chandimal, Akila Dananjaya, and Thisara Perera.

For the first time since 2009, the PCB is preparing to host a top tier team for a proper bilateral series that involves ODI and T20 series.

"Sri Lanka Cricket today held a meeting with players, who were chosen as part of a preliminary squad to select the team, which will be touring Pakistan to play 03 ODIs and 03 T20i matches, starting from 27 September to 09 October, 2019", said Sri Lankan cricket board in a statement released on their website.

This stems from the fact that the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked by armed gunmen in March 2009, which left six players injured and resulted in the deaths of six Pakistani police officers and two civilians.
