"I'm trying to win by as many as I possibly can", Thomas said regarding his plan for the final round yet to come.

Thomas birdied the first five holes, answered a bogey at six with a birdie at the par-5 eighth, hit an fantastic approach at the par-5 10th to set up a tap-in eagle and sank a 22-foot birdie chip from the rough at the par-5 14th. Thomas beat that by two. For Thomas, winning means a return to Maui to start the year with the rest of the PGA Tour winners.

Thomas started his round with five successive birdies, and later recorded a tap-in eagle at the par-five 10th after a precise five-wood approach shot.

He leads by six shots with a round to play in Chicago and is within touching distance of his first win of the season.

"I hit a lot of great shots today but that (tee shot) was an under-rated one", Thomas said.

"I just hope the trend doesn't [continue] and someone else breaks [the course record] tomorrow", he said after his stellar round.

The goal for Tiger Woods is simply to get to the Tour Championship, where last year he ended five-year drought with a victory. "I'm going to have a have another good round and see if we can make some history".

Reigning Masters champion Tiger Woods matched his lowest round since February with a 67 while reigning US Open champion Gary Woodland shot 64.

For others, plenty is at stake.

The highlight reel continued when he chipped in from 20 feet from lush rough to birdie the 14th hole.

Hideki Matsuyama has never missed the Tour Championship since his first full year on the PGA Tour.

Finau could lock up a spot on the Presidents Cup team if he were to keep his position, even better if he were to finish alone in second.

And just like that, he was already thinking about Sunday.

The event, which hosts an elite field of the top 70 ranked players, sets the stage for The Tour Championship in Atlanta, where only the top 30 are eligible to play for the championship.

And then, the fireworks on a cloudy, dreary afternoon that featured a rain stoppage of just more than an hour.

Matsuyama, now 33rd in the FedEx Cup standings, needs to finish inside the top 30 in the FedEx Cup points in order to advance to next week's season-ending Tour Championship. He finished at seven-under 281, tied in a provisional 38th place with the leaders still to complete their rounds. He's projected to be in 42nd place in the FedEx Cup points race.
