Defiant anti-government protesters brought unprecedented violence to Hong Kong International Airport on Tuesday night, clashing with riot police after severely disrupting flights, even as officials secured an injunction order against those occupying the terminal building.

BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways (0293.HK) said it had suspended with immediate effect on Tuesday a second officer operating flight CX216 for misuse of company information, and had also commenced internal disciplinary proceedings.

According to the South China Morning Post, the riot police used pepper spray in the airport to drive out protesters.

Airlines including Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. had already canceled hundreds more flights Tuesday, the day after the government chose to briefly shut the airport during a mass demonstration in the arrivals area.

Preparations for Chinese military drills in the border town of Shenzhen, however, were reported on Monday by the Chinese Communist Party's (CPC) own media arm - the troop's movements did not require secret intelligence to divine.

Protesters also barricaded some passageways in the airport with luggage trolleys and other objects.

Protesters are demanding that Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam step down and pull legislation that would allow the government to extradite criminal suspects to mainland China, where they would likely face torture or unfair politically charged trials.

Support is mounting for protesters in Hong Kong hours after President Donald Trump said that U.S.intelligence has informed him of Chinese troops being mobilized to a city bordering Hong Kong.

But it quickly evolved into a much broader campaign for democratic freedoms, and to stop the growing influence of China's authoritarian rulers in the semi-autonomous city.

Soon afterwards a second man, wearing a yellow journalist vest, was surrounded, zip-tied and then beaten by a small group who accused him of being a spy.

"My responsibility goes beyond this particular range of protest", Lam said on Tuesday, adding that violence had pushed the territory into a state of "panic and chaos". "Everyone should be calm and safe".

The Chinese government has repeatedly signalled the protesters are reaching the limits of the "one country, two systems" legal framework that gives Hong Kong its autonomy.

Beijing is sending increasingly ominous signals that the unrest must end, with state-run media showing videos of security forces gathering across the border. "I hope it works out peacefully, nobody gets hurt, nobody gets killed", he said.

"#China's escalating threats against #HongKong is not an "internal matter", it's a blatant violation of commitment to Hong Kong's autonomy Beijing made in an global treaty" Rubio tweeted on Tuesday. "I hope it works out for everybody, including China, by the way".
