Large parts of England were without electricity following a large scale power cut causing transport disruption including trains travelling to and from Edinburgh breaking down.

But now it has been fixed.

The outage also affected several overground train services, with Thameslink tweeting that its trains had been brought to a "standstill", and London North Eastern Railway said several of its had broken down, according to PA.

Some 300,000 people were hit across London and southeastern part of the country, while 500,000 were hit across Western Power Distribution's network.

Trains began to run out of King's Cross late on Friday night after the station was shut down amid "apocalyptic" rush-hour scenes across England. Meanwhile, the London North-Eastern Railway and the National Railways advised all passengers not to travel.

Some traffic lights have also been reported as not working.

Problems with two generators caused the massive electricity cut, the National Grid said.

London and large chunk of the United Kingdom were hit with a power cut Friday afternoon that disrupted train travel and snarled rush-hour traffic.

The Danish offshore wind developer said the project off Yorkshire, which is not yet completed but exporting power, "lost load" on Friday afternoon.

Speaking to the BBC, he explained that automatic processes triggered by the loss of the two generators had temporarily disconnected electrical demand across the country to "help keep the rest of the system safe".

"We appreciate the disruption caused and will continue to investigate, with the generators involved and wider stakeholders, to understand the lessons learnt", added the statement.

Frustrated travellers continued to experience disruption to services at London's Kings Cross station on Saturday.

It said it could take enforcement action, including a fine, after train passengers were stranded, traffic lights failed to work and thousands of homes lost power during the blackout.

"All trains were stopped while our back-up signalling system started up".

Video footage shared on social media showed a throng of passengers walking through a darkened Clapham Junction station, while staff at Vauxhall Station turned commuters away and onto the street.
