He played college football at Western Kentucky and later coached there. The Louisville native was initially resistant to getting into coaching, but he eventually accepted an offer to join Western Kentucky's staff as a graduate assistant. "He was the guy I leaned on for advice just in life. This is hard to believe and we're all going to miss him". We lost a great one. The Steelers announced Drake's passing in a statement released on the team's website. Darryl Drake was a great man who loved the game of football but more importantly he was a great father and husband.

"Darryl had such an impact on the players he coached and everyone he worked with throughout his entire career", Rooney said. "Thanks for always standing on the table for me". Our relationship goes way back to my days at North Texas when he was at Texas and our paths would often cross when we were recruiting kids at the same schools. He remained a wide receivers coach for the rest of his career, spending four seasons in Arizona (2013-2017) and his final two seasons with the Steelers. Darryl Drake is survived by his wife Sheila, his three children, and their grandchildren (down the line).

Drake was entering his second season as Pittsburgh's wide receivers coach.

Drake has worked with wide receivers like Brandon Marshall, Larry Fitzgerald, and Antonio Brown, and his educational pedigree is equally impressive.

The Cardinals issued a statement via social media as well. Johnson, a former standout receiver at the University of Toledo who has shown flashes of his potential this summer during training camp, paid homage to Drake Sunday via Twitter.

Drake had been coaching various positions in college from 1983-2003 when the pros came calling. Drake often said that getting a chance to positively influence the lives of young people was the best part of his job. "His players loved him". They also were jolted by the death of rookie Randy Frisch in a auto accident during their 1977 training camp.

The Steelers canceled their Sunday practice.
