Saudi Arabia suspends visas to people from DR Congo over Ebola

Beni graves Saudi Arabia suspends visas to people from DR Congo over Ebola

Health officials warned that although there are now no Ebola cases in Uganda, the DRC's outbreak continues to escalate, posing a risk to Uganda, which shares a long and porous border with the DRC.

The African Union (AU) on Thursday reiterated its grave concern over the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Saudi Arabia's move to suspend the issuance of visas to Congolese citizens comes following an announcement by the World Health Organization declaring the Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of global concern.

The decision to convene a resource mobilization forum was made due to the "seriousness of health, economic and security threat that the ongoing Ebola virus disease outbreak emergency poses to the continent", according to the AU.

The country, for example, has a detailed national preparedness plan, is training health workers on how to detect cases early, and is vaccinating health workers in high-risk areas, the WHO said.

The World Bank's engagement in DRC is focused on investing in people, supporting communities, strengthening services and systems, which are all critical steps to stamping out this crisis--and to tackle the underlying sources of poverty and inequity that have helped fuel this deadly outbreak.

Moreover, for the past few months, Ebola has killed more than 1.5 thousand residents of the Congo, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to the UNN.

"Rwanda has been proactive and engaged in Ebola preparedness at all levels since the outbreak was declared nearly one year ago in neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo", he said.

Data from New York-based Congo Research Group reveals just 3 percent of the population in DRC are Muslims.

It's the first time vaccines have been deployed against the killer virus discovered in 1976.

The virus is threatening to spread to the major city of Goma or spill over DRC's border into Uganda.

World Health Organization now has over 600 staff in the field, with 200,000 person-days spent in the field in total, but emergencies chief Mike Ryan told reporters that many agencies could redouble their efforts and deploy more people in the field.

"But our colleagues in CDC have provided incredible support, both in DRC, in the surrounding countries, here in Geneva, in our operation centres in backstopping and providing high-level technical assistance to the response", Ryan said.
