Dragon separated from Falcon 9's second stage about nine minutes after liftoff and will attach to the space station on Saturday, July 27.

With the CRS-18 Dragon in orbit, it is expected to spend two days chasing the International Space Station.

Jessica Jensen, SpaceX's Director of Dragon Mission Management, said: "We are still inspired by all of the Apollo missions and are excited to continue to work with NASA as they continue to explore the universe".

Of all the previous launches under the contract, this is the seventh mission to feature a reused Dragon capsule - and the first time a Dragon capsule has run three prior resupply missions: the CRS-6 mission in April 2015, the CRS-13 mission in December 2017 and now, the CRS-18 mission.

Following a successful launch and first stage separation, the Falcon 9 booster was recovered for a second time touching down at Cape Canaveral's Landing Zone 1.

Wednesday's attempted launch was originally set for 6:24 p.m.

The rocket is carrying dozens of scientific experiments to the station's microgravity lab.

SpaceX called off a Falcon 9 countdown on Wednesday because of the risk of lightning from thunderstorms alongside Florida's Space Coast, pushing back the departure of a cargo mission for the International Space Station till Thursday.

A new docking adapter for future commercial space taxis will be delivered as well, along with more mundane supplies such as food and clothing.

Dragon is also outfitted with four ceramic heat shield tiles that are being tested for use on the Starship, SpaceX's next-gen spacecraft now under development. SpaceX is contracted to resupply the space station through 2024.

The company will incorporate any other safety-related changes resulting from the investigation into the vehicle, she said, "but as of this point in time, we do not anticipate that anomaly investigation to hold up cargo Dragon 2".

It's been reported that the launch was supposed to include 5,500 more experiments and supplies for the six astronauts aboard the ISS.
