U.S. congresswomen targeted by Trump: 'We will not be silenced'
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington
16 July, 2019, 16:15
Republicans have mostly stayed quiet about Trump's comments.
"It doesn't concern me because many people agree with me, " Trump said at the White House. "When you hear a lot of people speaking in Arabic, you know, suspicion arises".
At a press conference on Capitol Hill, the four lawmakers said Trump was trying to sow division and distract attention from what they characterized as failed policies on immigration, healthcare and taxation. "Certain people HATE our Country.", he said. But Collins also said she disagrees "strongly" with numerous views of the "far-left" members of the House Democrats. When it was her time at the podium, Omar called on the House to begin impeachment proceedings against President Trump.
"There is no excuse for the president's spiteful comments - they were absolutely unacceptable and this needs to stop", Murkowski said in a Facebook post in response to Trump's tweets on Sunday asking several Democratic Congresswomen to go back to their home countries rather than telling the USA people how to run the government.
Trump triggered this controversy on Sunday, when he jumped into an internal Democratic Party dispute involving Pelosi and the four lawmakers over their decision to vote against a bill to address the humanitarian crisis at the border. "Amusing thing though, he never tells me to 'go back where I come from.' Hmm I wonder why?"
Despite the condemnation, Trump doubled down on Monday, saying he didn't think his comments were racist and telling the women that if they don't like it in the United States, they can leave. You can leave right now.
Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley and Tlaib were born in the United States while Omar, a Somali refugee, arrived in 1992.
Other than Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), an immigrant from Somalia, it's unclear who Trump had in mind, as few other Democratic Congresswomen are from other countries, and those that are are from countries considered stable such as India and Germany.
Tlaib said Trump's tweets and remarks were "a continuation of his racist and xenophobic playbook".
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez answered Trump in a tweet, saying, "Mr. President, the country I "come from", & the country we all swear to, is the United States".
Trump is incapable of arguing about the intricacies of policies that could improve the country so opts instead for personal attacks, she said.
"We all know AOC and this crowd are a bunch of communists, they hate Israel, they hate our own country". She has said, "The people closest to the pain should be closest to the power".
Labour MP David Lammy said: 'Too often people are more allergic to the term racism than acts of racism themselves.
Pelosi said she was seeking Republicans to co-sponsor a House resolution "condemning the president's xenophobic tweets" and "characterization of immigrants".
Rep Elise Stefanik of NY said: "While I strongly disagree with the tactics, policies, and rhetoric of the far-left socialist 'Squad, ' the President's tweets were inappropriate, denigrating, and wrong".
Moments before the news conference, the president again attacked the four congresswomen.
"They bring a tremendous amount of disgrace to public policy and public life, and I condemn them all", Baker told reporters at an event in Boston. "Horrible anti-Israel, anti-USA, pro-terrorist & public shouting of the F...word, among many other bad things, and the petrified Dems run for the hills". "Not good for the Democrats!"
Democrats in Congress immediately called out the president's comments on Sunday as racist and divisive, while many Republicans have remained silent.
In his series of appalling tweets, Trump said that Democratic Congresswomen who "originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe", should effectively "go back to where they came from".
Tim Scott of SC is the only black Republican in the U.S. Senate.
The House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy said: "The President is not a racist". Ben McAdams, said in a statement that the president's "tweet was offensive and beneath the dignity of the office he holds". "No matter how much I found him ultimately unfit, I still gave him the benefit of the doubt about being a racist".
