Louisiana civil rights activist found in car trunk was suffocated, coroner says

Sadie Roberts-Joseph Founder Of Louisiana African American Museum Found Dead In Trunk Of Car
Bennie Garza | 16 July, 2019, 15:46

Louisiana tell consultant C. Denise Marcelle, a longtime pal of Roberts-Joseph, acknowledged that info of the activist's loss of life left her coronary heart empty.

One of her 11 siblings, Beatrice Johnson, told The Advocate she last saw her sister on Friday when Roberts-Joseph stopped by with some cornbread batter she had mixed and wanted to bake at her sister's home because her own oven "went out".

She also was the founder of the non-profit Community Against Drugs and Violence and an annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office said it planned to publish the results of the autopsy on its website on Monday.

Police are treating her death as suspicious.

The Baton Rouge Police Department have issued a statement in response to her death, celebrating her legacy and reflecting on their time working together.

A community leader who founded the Odell S. Williams Now and Then African-American History Museum in 2001 and pushed to elevate Juneteenth to a state and national holiday honoring the freeing of US slaves, Roberts-Joseph's death was mourned by local groups and officials, who praised her legacy.

The NAACP Baton Rouge Branch remembered Roberts-Joseph in a Facebook post.

Below, Roberts Joseph discusses the museum in a video interview on Cox Media.

Her family had seen her earlier that day, Coppola said.

According to the news outlet, investigators are still determining the cause of death. "We had opportunities to work with her on so many levels". "From reviving Juneteenth, to the Culture preserved at Her Museum, she was a trendsetter and icon in this City". Police have been overwhelmed with calls from people offering tips or just sharing how beloved she was. "She will be missed by BRPD and her loss will be felt in the community she served". "She set out to educate our kids on where they come from, because if you don't know where you come from you don't know where you're going". It hailed Roberts-Joseph as a "tireless advocate of peace in the community".

The museum features African art, exhibits on growing cotton and black inventors as well as a 1953 bus from the period of civil rights boycotts in Baton Rouge. Mayor Sharon Weston Broome said the city is offering a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment.
