The man accused of murdering American biologist Suzanne Eaton in Crete earlier this month was seen being marched towards Greek prosecutors in handcuffs on Tuesday a day after confessing to her killing.

The suspect is a 27-year-old man from Kissamos, a town about 20 miles away from Chania, where Suzanne Eaton was attending a conference, Eleni Papathanassiou, spokesperson for Crete's police department, told ABC News.

Last week, the coroner said Eaton's death "resulted from a criminal act", but did not provide further details citing the pending investigation.

After leaving her body there, he re-blocked the entrance of the shaft with a wooden palette and then went to a nearby graveyard, "where he carefully cleaned the trunk of his auto from evidence and other forensic findings", Papathanasiou said.

Eaton, a 59-year-old molecular biologist, was attending the conference when she went missing on July 2.

Her body was found six days later, dumped facedown deep inside the bunker in the port city of Chania. She had visited Crete before for reasons related to her work.

The farmer had previously posted detailed photos of his exploration of the abandoned bunker where Eaton was found, which was dug into natural underground caves by the Nazis during World War II.

Her body was found a week later in a state of decay.

Her cause of death was ruled a murder by asphyxiation, police said.

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory announced that flags would be flown at half-staff Monday in Eaton's honor. She was the mother of two sons and married to a British scientist.

Eaton's sister described her as an "accomplished woman" of "insatiable curiosity", and praised her achievements.

Her sister added that Eaton would often worry about not giving her family enough time as well as devoting herself to science.

This continues to be a developing story. "The world has lost more than it will ever know", he wrote.

In a statement, the Max Planck Institute said Eaton was "an outstanding and inspiring scientist, a loving spouse and mother, an athlete as well as a truly wonderful person beloved to us all".
