Top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic held off a spirited challenge from Spanish outsider Roberto Bautista Agut on Friday to triumph in four sets and advance to a mouthwatering Wimbledon final against Roger Federer.

After striking a attractive backhand victor down the line on the 45th shot of Wimbledon's longest ever rally, Novak Djokovic asks the crowd to turn up the volume and get on their feet.

Here are some of the reactions.

However, the latest installment in what has become one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports left fans both inside the arena and watching all over the globe spellbound again.

They hadn't faced each other across the net at the All England Club since. The Spaniard beat number 26 seed Guido Pella 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 on Wednesday to reach a first ever career semifinal. Federer found his groove in the third set, besting Nadal 6-3 to take a two sets to one lead heading into what could have been the decisive fourth set.

"It's always very, very cool to play against Rafa here, especially [as we] haven't played in so long", Federer said. Another was that he was able to withstand Nadal's serve, even though it has improved a ton over the years.

It took Federer five match points to finally defeat Nadal in what was the legends' 40th career meeting. Andre, 49, from Sao Paulo said: "I like his attitude, I know a lot of people think he's grumpy and a bit arrogant". He played brilliantly. He maintained patience in the first set, but later he started playing better.

Only five points went against serve in the first seven games as the two gladiators settled into their groove. On his fifth match point, he served down the T and raised his arms in celebration as the Nadal return sailed long.

A fifth match point arrived and this time Nadal swung a backhand over the baseline and Federer pumped his arms above his head to celebrate, with David Beckham echoing most people's thoughts as he mouthed "unbelievable" in the Royal Box. Djokovic, the top-ranked tennis player in the world, has won 25 of those times.

Laver, now 80 and still the only man in the 50-year professional era to win all four grand slam titles in the same year, was being interviewed by former world No.1 John Newcombe at a barbecue held in his honour when the conversation diverted to Federer. "That first set was huge as well, to get the lead".

But Federer's experience ensured that he eventually closed out the match quite comfortably.

"I don't want to say always the better player wins, but sometimes it can be tough".

Newcombe, the long-time host of the traditional Aussie Wimbledon barbecue, recalled another tale about Federer that also revealed a lesser-known side to the 20-times grand slam champion.

"We all know how good he is anywhere", Djokovic said about Federer, "but especially here". He's a bit better than the two others (Nadal and Federer) as hard as it is to say.

There was no respite for Nadal, an 18-time Slam victor, who slipped a break down at 2-1 in the fourth. He's won 101 matches at the place - more than any other man at any other Slam, even Nadal at Roland Garros - and all of those trophies. But a young guy came and believed, Novak said: "I'm going to win".

It's all on the line in their 48th meeting, and Djokovic must shut off the fact he is facing Wimbledon's darling and channel all that energy into lifting a 16th Grand Slam title.
