Salmonella - Tainted Papayas and Pig Ears, not Proper for your Plate

The illness can last for between four and seven days. Those states are Connecticut, Florida, Massachusettes, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Texas.

The investigation into a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Uganda indicates that Agroson's LLC of Bronx, New York, is the exclusive distributor of the imported papayas that likely made consumers from this outbreak sick, according to the FDA.

Restaurants, retailers and other food service providers from all states shouldn't sell or serve any Cavi brand papayas distributed by Agroson's LLC. "To date, there have been no positive product samples", it says. Separately, 17 people of 24 interviewed reported contact with pig ear dog treats or dogs fed those treats.

One Florida resident who was infected had traveled to CT the week before becoming sick, according to ABC News.

The cases stretch back as far as January 14 when the first outbreak was reported, however the illness has been reported as recently as June 8.

As part of the epidemiological investigation, health officials conducted interviews about consumption and exposures in the week prior to onset of illness.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) issued a consumer advisory for pig ears sold in bulk at retailers statewide because the pet treats could potentially be contaminated with salmonella, officials said. Ill people range in age from less than 1 year to 81 years, with a median age of 23. No deaths have been reported. Marler Clark is the only law firm in the nation with a practice focused exclusively on foodborne illness litigation.

The alert highlights the brand Cavi as being the probable source of the outbreak.

If you believe you may be ill as a result of consuming a tainted fruit, contact your doctor.
