Kidney Care Partners Supports Trump Administration's Executive Order on Kidney Care

Kidney disease is the ninth-leading cause of death in America, costing U.S. taxpayers $110 billion every year - more than the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Homeland Security and Nasa combined. The president is delivering the speech at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in D.C.

"The longer you're on dialysis, the outcomes are worse", said Dr. Amit Tevar, a transplant surgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who praised the administration's initiatives.

President Donald Trump outlined an agenda to improve preventive treatment of kidney disease Wednesday, zeroing in on a condition that afflicts more than 30 million Americans and costs more than $100 billion in annual Medicare spending.

The American Kidney Fund (AKF) commends the President and the Department of Health and Human Services for meaningfully addressing the epidemic of kidney disease-the fastest-growing noncommunicable disease in America.

The changes won't happen overnight because some initiatives will require new government regulations.

The president's address on kidney health comes as his administration faces intense scrutiny over the president's past friendship with indicted billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, and Labor Secretary Alex Acosta's handling of a past case involving Epstein.

As a patient-centric organization dedicated to innovating the field of transplantation for more than 20 years, CareDx is excited about the direction the field is moving and commends HHS for its efforts to support patients living with kidney disease and their goals to increase transplantation. The model should adjust payments based on the percentage of a participating provider's attributed patients who either are on home dialysis or have received a kidney transplant and should include a learning system to help participants improve performance. "We look forward to continuing to work with nephrologists to help create even better care models for our unique population of patients".

The president's plans include educating and treating people with early forms of kidney disease and to make kidney transplants easier to get. Early intervention often leads patients who need dialysis to choose the best treatment option for their lifestyle and reduces hospitalizations.

"My order supports the selfless individuals who donate kidneys by granting them reimbursements for extra expenses associated with organ donations such as lost wages and job care", Trump said.

Sec. 3. Announcing an Awareness Initiative on Kidney and Related Diseases. Patients typically must spend hours three or four times a week hooked to machines that filter waste out of their blood.

These changes are being implemented through Medicare's innovation center, created under the Obama-era Affordable Care Act and empowered to seek savings and improved quality. Officials pointed to a study suggesting that in the long term, it may be possible to find 17,000 more kidneys and 11,000 other organs from deceased donors for transplant every year, the AP reported.

CareDx, Inc., headquartered in Brisbane, California, is a molecular diagnostics company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of clinically differentiated, high-value diagnostic solutions for transplant recipients.

"Some OPOs are very aggressive and move forward with getting organs allocated and donors consented, and there are those that are a little more lackadaisical about it", said Pittsburgh's Tevar.
