The Air Canada flight was forced to divert from its original destination of Sydney, Australia, and landed in Honolulu.

According to reports, Flight 033 was just west of Hawaii when it encountered severe turbulence over the Pacific Ocean.

Sam Rattanasone, a passenger on the flight, posted pictures of the aftermath on his Instagram account.

"I watched a whole bunch of people hit the ceiling of the plane", said Alex MacDonald. While the landing itself went smoothly, a number of people, including one crew member, were injured in the turbulence. "A couple of the air hostesses were bringing food out at the time, and they hit the roof as well". "You drop usually a couple dozen feet or more and if you've been in the airplane standing, or serving food, you may get injuries to your neck, etc. because you're not in your seat belt".

MacDonald added that staff and ground crew were "amazing" in the wake of the incident.

The number of passengers on the plane totalled 269.

A spokesperson for the airline said the injuries were considered minor, but that medical personnel were examining the passengers.

Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman wasn't able to immediately provide details about what kinds of injuries were involved. Airline spokesperson, Peter Fitzpatrick said that the airline was in the process of arranging hotels and meals for all of the passengers that were on board the grounded-flight.
